My Verizon Wireless story:
For many wireless users, buying a cell phone can drastically increase expenses. Not only can the initial payment for a smart phone run hundreds of dollars, but the recurring monthly charges, add-on charges for overages, and taxes can really add up. And we are not even mentioning the cost of buying apps for entertainment and productivity.
The other problem with phone purchases is that you are generally locked-in to a cell phone contract, typically for 2 years. If you happen to fall in-love with the new next greatest phone, and your contract has yet to expire, you will have to pay a hefty price to upgrade. Personally I want to the lowest price possible for my new or refurbished cell phone and get a contract I’m comfortable with. I have purchased 2 phones from Verizon Wireless online, and saved hundreds using coupon codes and buying refurbished.
After having a good experience with Verizon, I decided to write these tips and give a brief overview of how I save money.

Tip #1: Choose a phone, that you will be happy with for a few years. I would typically spend a little more here, since you will likely have to sign a 2 year contract.
Tip #2: Is that phone available as a refurbished model? Most people shy away from refurbished products, but I fully embrace them. Verizon Wireless offers certified pre-owned phones that have passed a 100+ point check list. Verizon also performs a cosmetic inspection of the phone, to check for blemishes and scratches. Verizon also has a state of the art functional manual and electronic inspection performed on each phone. If you are still worried, there is a 14 day return policy Verizon CPO refurbished phones. Basically these devices are “like-new.”
Tip #3: Check this page for up to date offers from Verizon. I check Verizon daily for current coupon and promo codes, and there is typically a free shipping code and maybe even an offer for up to 30% off. Android phones tend to drop in prices rapidly after they release. I’ve seen them drop to “FREE” after only few months. So keep your eyes peeled for great offers.
